Rewriting traditions: Contemporary irish fiction

Abstract

The literary landscape of contemporary Irish fiction is an extraordinary one; it is vital, multifarious and difficult to label. Within the multiplicity that characterises this narrative universe, we find copious examples of novels and short stories that are rewritings of previous and well-known pieces. The notion of rewriting and its varied embodiments is the guiding principle in this book, which is divided into three main parts. Part I gathers nine articles by scholars who approach the multiple strategies deployed by Irish writers when they aim at resignifying literary traditions, modes or strategies in their contemporary (re)appropriations of the past. Part II approaches the notion of rewriting from the perspectives of literary translation and performance, and includes excerpts from works by Mary Costello, Claire Keegan and Sarah Baume. Part III offers readers a selection of self-study exercises and further readings that expands the central views discussed in this volume. Rewriting Traditions encourages dialogues on creativity and rewriting in relation to the unlimited cartographies of contemporary Irish fiction. El paisaje literario de la narrativa irlandesa contemporánea es extraordinario; vital, múltiple y difícil de clasificar. Dentro de la variedad que caracteriza este universo narrativo, encontramos abundantes ejemplos de novelas y cuentos que son reescrituras de obras anteriores y muy conocidas. La noción de reescritura y sus diversas encarnaciones es la idea rectora de este libro, que se encuentra dividido en tres partes principales. La primera parte reúne nueve artículos escritos por académicos que se aproximan al amplio abanico de estrategias implementadas por los autores irlandeses cuando sus objetivos incluyen resignificar las tradiciones, modos o recursos literarios en sus (re)apropiaciones del pasado. La segunda parte aborda la noción de reescritura desde la óptica de la traducción literaria y la puesta en escena, e incluye fragmentos de obras de Mary Costello, Claire Keegan y Sara Baume. La tercera parte ofrece a los lectores una selección de ejercicios y recomendaciones de lectura que amplía las ideas centrales analizadas en el presente volumen. Rewriting Traditions promueve el diálogo sobre la creatividad y la reescritura en relación con las cartografías ilimitadas de la narrativa irlandesa contemporánea.
